Williams Park Zoo is owned and operated by the City of Providence and
is supported by the Rhode Island Zoological Society (RIZS).

RIZS
strives to secure the private and public sector support needed by Roger
Williams Park Zoo to contribute significantly to the conservation of our
earths animals, plants and other natural resources and to serve
the community as a valued resource for education, economic development
and entertainment. Working in partnership with the Zoo, Rhode Island Zoological
Society works to:
- Identify
and secure funding for new exhibits, exhibit improvements, infrastructure
needs and for the Zoos conservation, research and educational
programs.
- Successfully
manage the gate (admissions) and concessions contracts to maximize earned
revenues and improve the visitor experience.
- Increase
public awareness of and appreciation for the Zoo throughout New England.
- Cultivate
and manage a Zoo membership program that complements overall marketing
efforts, provides the public with a vehicle for greater involvement
with the Zoo, and generates financial support for Zoo needs and programs.
- Represent
the Zoos many stakeholders, by providing input in the review of
existing Zoo programs, public policy efforts and in planning for the
Zoos continued growth and success.
- Recruit
and maintain an active and effective Board of Trustees and staff who
are dedicated to the mission of the Zoo and to the mission of the Society.

The mission of Roger Williams Park Zoo is to contribute significantly
to the conservation of the earth's dwindling natural resources and to
serve the community as a valued resource for education, economic development
and recreation. To accomplish this dual mission of conservation and community
service, the Zoo strives to:
In the area of conservation:
1. Provide the highest quality care of the animals in our collection;
2. Actively participate in the American Zoo
and Aquarium Association's (AZA) Species
Survival Plans (SSP), Taxon
Advisory Groups (TAG) and Faunal Interest Groups (FIG), conservation
efforts designed to ensure the survival of endangered wildlife.
3. Collaborate with local, state and federal government agencies as well
as local, national and international conservation organizations to promote
wildlife conservation;
4. Maintain a strong research department that contributes significant
knowledge to the conservation and management of animals, and serves as
a model to peer institutions;
5. Develop and conduct educational programs that reach a variety of different
audiences with a message of conservation that inspires involvement and
action;
6. Support, to the best that the Zoo's resources will allow, local, national
and international fieldwork in conservation and environmental education;
In the area of community service:
1. Provide an outstanding recreational experience that, through sound
financial planning and affordable pricing, can be enjoyed by all visitors
regardless of income level;
2. Serve the local and regional educational community, through the Zoo's
interactive facility and programs, as a valuable resource for learning
science and environmental education;
3. Serve as a model of accessibility by providing a physical site and
programs that are available to all visitors regardless of age, disability,
language or culture;
4. Increase tourist revenues to the city and state by nurturing a reputation
for excellence that attracts visitory from other New England states and
beyond;
5. Support, to the best that the Zoo's resources will allow, other agencies,
groups and organizations dedicated to serving the needs of our community.
