Flutterby: Butterflies in Bloom at Roger Williams Park Zoo

Flutterby: Butterflies in Bloom at Roger Williams Park Zoo

A family looks at the plants and butterflies

       About the Exhibit

At Flutterby, you'll wander through a picturesque greenhouse filled with hundreds of North America’s most beautiful butterfly species.  And just as butterflies fill the air, striking flowers and nectar plants cover the ground, an enticement to bring these “flowers in flight” even closer – perhaps even close enough to land right on you!

In the midst of this whimsical setting, enjoy these fun interactive elements:

  • Watch the “birth” of a butterfly as it emerges from its chrysalis
  • Become an expert at identifying the many different species by name, and see if you can spot them in the wild
  • Find out some surprising butterfly fun facts, like why they “taste” with their feet and how they use mimicry to survive
  • Let little ones get "carried away" on a giant caterpillar climb-on photo station
  • Learn about the threats butterflies face, and why many are on the brink of extinction
  • See a caterpillar food garden, and learn how you can set up a butterfly garden in your own backyard
