BALI
MYNAH
Leucopsar rothschildi
**Please
note that the Bali Mynah will be off exhibit until further notice, in
order to breed.
Tough to get a hold of: Found only on Bali, an island near Java.
Don't forget your umbrella: the habitat of the Bali Mynah is the
Rainforest.
Tasty! Diet consists of arthropods and arthropod larvae, worms and
occasional small mammals.
How do I look? These mynahs are fairly small (25 cm) members of
the starling family. Bali Mynahs are white with black flight feathers
and a marked crest.
A tight-knit family:
Mynahs nest in trees and lay three to four blue to blue-green eggs. The
eggs are incubated by both parents and hatch in 11-14 days.
Longevity: Wild three years.
Bali mynah want a cracker? Swift flyers, mynahs are noisy (they can
be taught to speak) and chatter in flight. Introduced from Southeast Asia
by Europeans in the early 1900s, Balis in particular are favorites of
royalty.
Some info: Today, their numbers are still being threatened by loss
of habitat and the pet trade.
Status: Endangered.
