RED RUFFED LEMUR
Varecia variegata rubra

Try looking for us in the northern portion of east coast of Madagascar.

Yoohoo, up here! Red ruffed lemur are found in the upper strata of forests.

Fruit is good: Red ruffed lemurs are vegetarian, and probably eat a high percentage of fruit.

Cute as the dickens: Head and body 51-55 cm, tail length 56-62 cm. Body deep red except underparts and extremities. Forehead, crown and tail black. White patch at back of neck. Weight about 48 kg.

Reproduction: Gestation is 98-106 days. A high percentage of twinning has been observed.

We're special: Longevity is unknown in wild, particularly for this species, which is considered exceptionally rare.

General information: Largest of the Lemuridae. Lives in pair-bonded families. The only lemurid that leaves young in nests. All members of the genus Varecia are characterized by long, dense fur, especially around the neck.

Status: Endangered and rare.
