DEXTER
CATTLE
Bos taurus
Kiss me, I (used to be) Irish: Breed originated in southwest Ireland.
It was popular on small farms and holdings. Small size made it quite manageable
(even if homed). Survives well on rough pasture and is fairly resistant
to winter weather, enduring outside conditions in most parts of the United
States and much of Canada.
Cattle self-affirmations: Dexter cattle are short, "blocky" and
horned. Black is the most usual color, though red and dun are also seen.
Adult males average 800 to 1,000 lbs., while females are usually in the
650 lb. range. Average height is around 40 inches at the withers (shoulders).
McDexter: Dexter Cattle are often refered to as the "the ideal family cow" because they are hardy, good climbers, produces hihg amounts of milk and are very adaptable.
Extra, extra: Dexter calves are not "flighty,"
are quite calm, and have been characterized as "extremely tame." Plus, it can produce up to 12 quarts of milk daily.
The Dexter has been dubbed "The Ideal Family Cow."
