Roger Williams Park Zoo Shatters Attendance Record in 2021

Thursday, January 20, 2022
Roger Williams Park Zoo announces record-breaking attendance of 834,960 visitors in 2021, representing an increase of 23.5% over pre-Covid attendance in 2019.

That number is the highest recorded since the Zoo began tracking visitor attendance. The Roger Williams Park Zoo is the most visited attraction in Rhode Island.

The Zoo also set a new record of 168,850 visitors for its annual Halloween event, Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular presented by Citizens. It exceeded the previous highest attendance in 2015 by 20%, thanks partly to perfect fall weather, a safe outdoor experience and a return to an event that is an annual tradition in New England.

2021 attendance was also notable given the reduction in student field trips and other programs, such as camps and scouts that operated with reduced capacity.

"After the challenges we faced with covid in 2020, we were optimistic but cautious; we didn't know what to expect in 2021," said Ron Patalano, interim executive director. "And as we celebrate our 150th birthday this year, it's heart-warming to know the Roger Williams Park Zoo is recognized as a valuable community asset in New England. We will continue to engage and inspire our guests to pursue our mission of conserving wildlife and wild places for years to come."

Additionally, the Zoo's digital presence also grew this year. Their website (rwpzoo.org) had a million visits. The Zoo's Facebook page grew by 12.6 % and its Instagram saw a 41% increase in 2021.

Roger Williams Park Zoo is Rhode Island’s number one outdoor family and tourist attraction, and a leader in conservation efforts undertaken by a zoo of its size. As leaders in conservation and animal care – we create engaging experiences that empower guests to join us in conserving wildlife and wild places.  Roger Williams Park Zoo is supported and managed by the Rhode Island Zoological Society and is owned by the City of Providence.
