Roger Williams Park Zoo Changes Hours of Operation due to Impacts of Covid -19

Thursday, September 10, 2020
Beginning the week of September 14th, Roger Williams Park Zoo will be closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays through the end of 2020.

Due to the unprecedented challenges of covid-19, Roger Williams Park Zoo is changing its daytime Zoo hours. The Zoo will continue to open 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Thursday through Monday. Zoo members will also enjoy exclusive Members-Only days on the first Wednesday of each month starting October 7th.

The Zoo will remain open on state holidays and during school vacation days as identified by the Providence Public School Department’s’ calendar that fall out on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Updated daytime hours will not affect the Zoo’s upcoming Drive-Through Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular, presented by Citizens, which will be open nightly from October 1 - November 1, 2020.

“We all know we are living in extraordinary days. Unfortunately, like many businesses across the U.S., the Zoo has felt the impacts of covid-19. Due to our temporary closure this past spring and new safety restrictions, the Zoo has seen a significant loss of revenue and lower than anticipated attendance,” says Dr. Jeremy Goodman, executive director of the Zoo. “Therefore, we have had to look for cost savings wherever possible, which resulted in the difficult decision to temporarily close the Zoo on Tuesdays and Wednesdays through December 31. We are all incredibly appreciative of our Zoo supporters who have rallied beside us throughout this challenging time.”

Roger Williams Park Zoo is home to more than 160 species from around the globe and every animal - from millipedes and hedgehogs to snow leopards and African elephants - receives the same level of outstanding veterinary and animal care. While many streams of revenue have been hit by covid-related restrictions, the Zoo’s expenses have not changed.

“We encourage folks to participate in and support many of our upcoming programs like our all new Private Insider Tours or take part in our virtual animal experiences,” says Dr. Jeremy Goodman. “Each time someone visits, contributes to our emergency fund, or even attends our annual Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular, they are helping us continue our mission of saving wildlife and wild places.”

Roger Williams Park’s Carousel Village, a fun family destination only ¼ mile from Roger Williams Park Zoo, has also updated its hours of operation and will be reflecting a Thursday through Monday schedule from noon – 4:00 pm.
