Animal Enrichment FAQs

What is animal enrichment?

Enrichment allows animals to engage in natural behaviors and provides physical and mental stimulation. These elements work to stimulate the senses and allow animals to demonstrate species-typical behavior (ie. foraging) as well as challenge them to think and problem-solve, which helps keep the animals’ minds active, stimulated and healthy. The animal care staff constantly devises new enrichment techniques to engage animals and promote species-appropriate behaviors, focusing on meeting the unique needs of each individual.

Why did you choose these items?

Each item on our wish list was thoughtfully chosen by our animal care team to make a real impact on our animals’ daily lives! From encouraging natural instincts like foraging, nesting, exploring, and playing, to giving our zookeeper team the tools they need to offer top-tier care, your gift directly enriches the lives of the animals here at the Zoo.

What are some types of enrichment?
  • Food & Nutritional: Puzzle feeders, scattered feeding, frozen ice treats, or novel foods that prolong eating time.
  • Sensory: Different scents (herbs, spices, or predator/prey odors), sounds, or textured surfaces.
  • Cognitive: Problem-solving devices, training sessions, and interactive objects that require focus.
  • Physical Habitat: Climbing structures, new perching areas, or substrate changes for digging.

Enrichment & Husbandry

Photo: Enrichment can take many forms. Items like this one promote foraging, and encourage our tamarin’s to exhibit natural behaviors for our golden lion tamarins.
