Major cuteness alert! Though our red wolf pups are still spending a majority of their time sleeping in their den, they are exploring their habitat more each day.

These pups are part of a cooperative effort to help save this iconic American species from extinction. These pups represent another success in the survival of red wolves.

Mirrors, a commonly used enrichment item, allow animals to stimulate social behaviors and observe their environment and themselves. All of our animals get daily enrichment to encourage natural behaviors and instincts.

It’s an otterly good day to be an otter! 🦦 Delightful, amazing and captivating – all describe giant otters Romo and Fernando. The giant otter can grow to more than 6 feet long and weigh up to 70 pounds, nearly twice as large as river otters.

Giant river otters spend their days hunting for fish in the rivers of the tropical rainforests of South America. Their tail enables them to swim quickly (they can swim 330 feet in under 30 seconds!) and maneuver easily underwater. #WorldOtterDay

Happy World Otter Day! 🦦
To celebrate, we wanted to share why otters, like siblings Flash and Roscoe, our North American River Otters are WANTED in nature.

Otters have particular adaptations that help them survive both in and out of water- sleek fur coats, webbed feet, and a third eyelid that aids them in seeing underwater. However, these adaptations do not help them fight pollution. Otters cannot thrive in heavily polluted waters due to how it affects their sources of food and shelter- therefore, when we see them in an ecosystem, we can conclude that the ecosystem is healthy and flourishing.

Why did the turtle cross the road? 🐢

If it’s mid-May through early July, those turtles are likely females that are migrating to nest or lay their eggs.

Here are some tips to become an expert turtle crossing guard:
🐢 If you see a turtle crossing the road, only attempt to help it if you can do so safely.
🐢 Move turtles to the other side of the road in the same direction it was going.
🐢 Pick up turtles by the back of the shell, not the tail to avoid causing serious injury.
