Group Volunteering FAQs

What’s the process for bringing a group/organization to volunteer?

Interested groups should fill out our group volunteering form here!

We try to schedule groups with at least 6 weeks in advance to ensure enough time to coordinate a suitable project. Please know that the Zoo may not be able to accommodate all groups based on our organization’s needs or the group’s request. We do our best to find an opportunity fit!

How many volunteers can you host?

This depends on the project, but we can comfortably host between 12-20 volunteers at the Zoo.

Who can be a group volunteer?

Individuals must be at least 18 years old to participate.

Is there a fee?

There is NO fee to be a group volunteer at Roger Williams Park Zoo. However, as a non-profit, any and all donations – monetary or in-kind – are accepted with tremendous gratitude. Visit our giving page for more ways to help.

Do we need to bring supplies?

This depends on the project. Groups may be asked to bring their own tools. This may include gloves, rakes, pruning shears etc.

What should I wear / bring?

Almost all of our projects are outside, so please be prepared to work in all weather conditions.

All volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes. Dress in layers and wear clothing that is appropriate for painting, gardening, cleaning, etc. We suggest that volunteers wear sunscreen, a hat, bug spray, and bring a water bottle. Groups are welcome to wear their company branded shirts!

Are there any additional forms or waivers?

Yes, all volunteers are required to fill out a waiver. This form will be shared with groups once their volunteer date has been finalized.

What are the benefits of volunteering?

Your service supports the Zoo’s conservation, animal care, and education mission! In addition, these projects can serve as team-building opportunities for your organization or corporation. Upon completing your group project/service, all volunteers are welcome to see our animal exhibits walk and enjoy the Zoo grounds.

What other volunteer opportunities are available?

The Zoo hosts a variety of volunteer programs from adult volunteer opportunities, teen volunteer opportunities, and volunteering to support the Zoo’s largest fundraiser. Please visit our volunteer page for more information.
