Ankole-Watusi Cattle Undergoing Treatment for Head Tilt

(Updated August 20)

Why does one of the Watusi cattle have tape around it’s horn?

Wasabi, one of our Watusi cattle is undergoing a unique form of physical therapy to improve his posture and balance! Last year, Wasabi developed an ear infection that led to a lasting head tilt. Ear infections are common in Watusi cattle because their massive horns make it hard for them to shake out water and debris. Plus, those giant horns can throw off their balance, making tilts even more likely.

The infection was treated, but the tilt stuck around, most likely because his neck muscles had weakened unevenly from carrying all that horn weight. So, Wasabi got a creative upgrade: horn weights! They’re just like ankle or wrist weights for humans, taped to his horns to help rebuild muscle and improve balance. (Yep, they’re literally ankle weights.) He’s basically doing neck day at the gym every day- Watusi style strength training!
