A routine checkup for Fauna, our green anaconda, i A routine checkup for Fauna, our green anaconda, is a whole team effort! 💪🐍 It took 7 keepers and 3 vets to complete this checkup including blood draws, visual exams, and weight and length checks! Fauna is in great health- she weighed in at a whopping 52.5 pounds and is 11ft, 3in long. 😳

These routine wellness exams are an essential part of preventative care for all of our animals! They allow our veterinary team to monitor growth, track changes, catch any potential concerns early, and ensure that each animal is happy and healthy. Great work team! 👏

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Rom We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Romo, our nearly 14-year-old giant otter on December 6th. Romo was considered geriatric in the giant otter world, where the life expectancy in human care typically ranges from 10 to 13 years.

Earlier in the year, Romo’s zookeepers noticed a shift in his behavior; he was eating less and seemed less energetic. A comprehensive medical evaluation, including an ultrasound, revealed masses in his spleen, later confirmed to be cancerous.

Our animal care team reached out to a network of veterinary oncologists to explore treatment options. The consensus was to try oral chemotherapy, a treatment that has shown some promise in dogs. Thanks to this oral chemotherapy, supportive care, and the dedicated attention of his keeper and veterinary teams, his condition was successfully managed for many months.

Following the recent loss of his brother, Fernando, staff closely monitored Romo’s well-being, keeping him enriched, engaged, and supported as he adjusted to life without his longtime companion. Unfortunately, in recent days, his keepers noticed a sudden decline in his activity. An emergency exam revealed that his cancer had advanced significantly and spread to other organs. With no remaining options to preserve his quality of life, the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize Romo. He was surrounded by the keepers who cherished and cared for him throughout his life.

Siblings are often very different in personality; where Fernando was larger than life, Romo was a quieter wingman who made his care team work just a little harder to win his heart. Romo was always eager to learn and happily engaged with his keepers. His smart, willing spirit made him one of a kind.

For all who visited, Romo and Fernando left a lasting mark. They inspired a profound appreciation for this magical species and their essential role in the ecosystems they call home. We are grateful to every staff member who provided them with exceptional care. They were beloved members of our Zoo family, and their memory lives on in the work we do.

This upgrade includes a cozy and spacious new holding building, enriching climbing structures, and a new pool for them to use seasonally. Their keepers also now have a more spacious workspace and an improved system for shifting the binturongs in and out of holding. These improvements will ensure that Poppy and Ricky are truly thriving in their new home!

Shout out to our operations team for all of their hard work and dedication on this project! 👏🏼
This #InternationalCheetahDay we are racing to spr This #InternationalCheetahDay we are racing to spread awareness! Did you know there are fewer than 7,500 cheetahs left in the wild? Threats like habitat loss, illegal pet trade, and human-wildlife conflict have made them Africa's most endangered big cat.

Our Zoo is proud to be a part of the AZA SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) Cheetah program. Supporting accredited zoos means you are supporting a global network working tirelessly on research, funding, and education to ensure the cheetah can win its race against extinction. Help us spread the word to #SavetheCheetah!

Our Zoo is heartbroken as we share the loss of bel Our Zoo is heartbroken as we share the loss of beloved giant otter, Fernando. At 11 years old, Fernando was considered geriatric, as giant otters typically live 10-13 years.

Fernando arrived at the Zoo with an old, orthopedic injury that healed abnormally in one of his hind legs. Over time, the injury led to arthritis and an altered gait, which placed undue stress on his feet. These factors resulted in pododermatitis, a painful inflammation of the skin and deeper tissues of the foot.

The pododermatitis was well managed for years thanks to multimodal medical management and the diligent care of his incredible keepers. When his arthritis and pododermatitis worsened a year ago, our veterinary care team employed groundbreaking stem cell therapy to extend his comfort and mobility for another 11 months.

Our vet department partnered with Michigan State University to develop a stem cell line from a sample of Fernando’s body fat to help treat his arthritis and pododermatitis. These stem cells were injected into Fernando's bloodstream. Treatment was successful and temporarily helped reduce inflammation and alleviate some of the weight-bearing issues, improving quality of life.

Fernando received a recheck last Wednesday that confirmed the condition of his feet and ankle had worsened. Ultimately, it was determined that there were no further effective treatment options, and our team made the compassionate decision to euthanize Fernando.

Fernando and his older brother, Romo, have lived here since 2018 and are both staff favorites. His big personality always shined through, especially when he was swimming and playing, often showing off to guests with his lively antics. Animal care is closely monitoring Romo as he adjusts to the absence of his brother and companion. Fernando will be so missed by all who knew and loved him.
