Blue-bellied roller

Coracias cyanogaster

Geographic Region: Wooded areas of western and central Africa

Isn’t it wild? The blue-bellied roller (Coracias cyanogaster) is a vibrant, medium-sized bird native to the moist savannas and woodlands of West and Central Africa. Known for its striking plumage and acrobatic flight, it is a favorite among birdwatchers and zoo-goers alike.

Why the “Roller”? They get their name from their spectacular courtship rituals. During the breeding season, pairs perform aerial acrobatics, diving from the sky and rolling side-to-side while letting out loud, raucous cackles.
