Romo, one of our resident giant otters, has been receiving specialized veterinary care for an ongoing medical issue. At 13 years old, Romo is considered geriatric in the giant otter world. Life expectancy for giant otters in the wild typically ranges from 10 to 13 years.

Recently, Romo’s zookeepers noticed a shift in his behavior; he was eating less and seemed less energetic. A comprehensive medical evaluation, including an ultrasound, revealed masses in his spleen, later confirmed to be cancerous from diagnostic samples. Our veterinary team reached out to a network of veterinary oncologists to explore treatment options. The consensus was to try oral chemotherapy, a treatment that has shown promise in dogs.

“We’re using a lower dose of chemotherapy, focusing on slowing the progression of the cancer and keeping Romo comfortable,” stated Director of Veterinary Services Dr. Kimberlee Wojick. “Our team is closely monitoring him for any side effects and are prepared to adjust the dosage or discontinue treatment if necessary. Our priority is his comfort and well-being.”

Romo appears to be responding well to chemotherapy and other supportive care. His appetite has improved, and he is acting more like himself again. While the future remains uncertain, our dedicated veterinary team, along with the unwavering support of his zookeepers, is committed to providing Romo with the highest level of care, compassion, and expertise for as long as he has.

We collaborate with RI DEM to ensure all roadkill deer are rigorously health-screened before being fed to our animals.
