A peek at some elephant training with our keepers! 👀

Countless hours of training, years of building trust, lots of love, and positive reinforcement are all key factors in building this incredible relationship with their keepers. Everything the trainers ask the girls to do has a significant meaning. Lifting feet, lying down, showing their ears, and turning are all critical skills that allow our elephants to participate in their own health care.

Day 3 of #ZookeeperWeek and we are shouting out our elephant care team! 🐘

From giving those giant feet some TLC, to training animal husbandry behaviors, our keepers work tirelessly to provide the best possible life for our herd. This training is critical to keeping our girls happy and healthy, as it allows them to participate in their own health care, making it easier on their trainers and on themselves. Stay tuned for a video of some of this training later tonight!

We're thrilled to share exciting news about the Am

We're thrilled to share exciting news about the American Burying Beetle Recovery Program!

This past year, RWPZoo successfully bred 300 American burying beetles, while our partners at SUNY Cobleskill contributed an additional 100. In late June, all 400 beetles were released onto Nantucket Island.

But the good news doesn't stop there! While on Nantucket, our team conducted trap monitoring and found a remarkable result: 36 wild beetles! This number is over three times what we found in 2023, highlighting a thriving wild population.
To further assess the success, we recently returned to Nantucket and examined 30% of the broods. We were thrilled to discover 547 larvae, leading us to estimate a total of 1,751 larvae produced across the entire release! This is a fantastic indicator for the future survival of the American burying beetle.

This incredible achievement wouldn't have been possible without the dedication of our partners, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), The Nature Conservancy’s Block Island Office, and the Nantucket Conservation Foundation. Their unwavering support has been instrumental in this program's success.

We also extend our deepest gratitude to the many dedicated volunteers who helped us throughout the year, including those from the Nantucket Land Bank, Maria Mitchell Association, and the Linda Loring Nature Foundation. Your contributions are invaluable!

Together, we're making a real difference for this fascinating species.

Join us July 26 for a FREE Summer Beats Concert featuring the Swanky Kitchen Band all the way from the Cayman Islands! Food trucks start serving delicious eats at 5pm, and the concert starts at 6pm on the Boathouse Lawn (across from the food trucks!). Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy the fun. Thank you, Zookeepers! 🧡 It's #NationalZookeeperWeek and we want to take the time to show that our keepers, and all zookeepers, are truly appreciated (especially by the animals in their care). Being a zookeeper isn't easy work, it comes with a lot of mental and physical strain. From early mornings to late nights, zookeepers dedicate countless hours to ensuring the well-being of their animals. Their passion and commitment to animal care and conservation are truly inspiring.

The work we do wouldn't be possible without these selfless heroes working to help protect wildlife and wild places every since day. And to the zookeepers, we see you and value you more than you know! Today, we are truly heartbroken to share the unexp

Today, we are truly heartbroken to share the unexpected passing of Nicko, our beloved baby two-toed sloth. A necropsy was performed, and it has been determined that Nicko passed from a viral disease. When Nicko presented with symptoms of respiratory illness, zookeepers and veterinary staff provided supportive care and treatment, but he succumbed to the virus.

The rainforest and veterinary staff are continuing to monitor all the sloths for changes in their condition or behavior. Two of our other sloths are currently undergoing treatment and are responding positively. Beanie, Nicko’s mom, appears to be behaving normally and we will continue to monitor her behavior as well.

Our zookeepers, veterinary and animal care staff, and the entire Roger Williams Zoo family are mourning this loss deeply. Nicko will always be remembered for his gentle spirit and will be missed greatly by all. 💙
