Oh my gourd! 🤯 We have a record breaking squash

Oh my gourd! 🤯 We have a record breaking squash on the Jack-O-Lantern trail. 🎃 Visitors to this year’s Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular will see something truly giant; a world-record-breaking squash weighing in at an amazing 2,200 pounds!

The massive squash was grown by local farmer Joe Jutras of Scituate, R.I., who has been partnering with the Zoo for years to provide pumpkins for the trail every fall. Jutras, a long-time competitive grower, holds multiple records for his Atlantic Giant pumpkins and squashes, but this year’s achievement tops them all.

“We’re thrilled to showcase Joe’s incredible world-record squash as part of this year’s Spectacular,” said Mike Finizza of Passion for Pumpkins, the Zoo’s partner for this annual event. “His dedication and skill have contributed to the event’s success for many years, and this record-breaking squash is the perfect addition to our show this year.”

Pumpkin spice isn't the only thing worth falling for this season! 🍂✨ Leaves aren't litter, they’re food and shelter for butterflies, bees, amphibians and more! Plus, they naturally decompose into nutrient-rich organic matter (yay, free fertilizer!).

DYK Americans dispose of over 35 million tons of yard waste annually? Many times, those tossed leaves contain about 45% of your spring butterfly and moth populations! Instead of bagging them up, consider keeping them where they fall to give our wild friends the best chance to thrive through the winter.
