Taking hoof care to new heights! 🦒 In honor of Int

Taking hoof care to new heights! 🦒 In honor of International Hoof Care Month, we are shining a spotlight on the incredible work our giraffe team has been doing on hoof trim training.

This training requires incredible trust between our keepers, vet staff, and our giraffes. Cora, our female giraffe is choosing to participate in her own healthcare, positioning her hooves exactly where the team needs them for a good trimming, thanks to the guidance of her trainers. Getting to this point comes from countless hours of positive reinforcement training (lots of snacks!) and building that trust. These regular hoof trims are important for preventative care, keeping them balanced and their joints comfortable.

Sloths are the world’s slowest land mammals, but they are surprisingly quick and agile when they are on a mission! Typically, they move at an average speed of 6 to 8 feet per minute due to their low metabolisms and their need to conserve energy.

It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Morobe, our male Matschie’s tree kangaroo. Morobe recently celebrated his 19th birthday, an impressive milestone for this species, as their average life expectancy is approximately 15-20 years in human care.

Morobe was being monitored for multiple age-related health conditions, and after a sudden decline in his health, it was determined that his conditions could not be managed in a way that would maintain a good quality of life, and ultimately the decision was made to humanely euthanize him.

In 2021, Morobe was paired with female tree kangaroo Keweng for breeding and sired two daughters, Paia and Ren. His favorite pastimes included napping in the sun, scent marking his orange ball, and of course, spending time with his neighbors Keweng and LaRoo.

Morobe’s keeper, Mac, shared the following: “He had a wonderful, laid-back personality and was always gentle with his keepers and fellow tree roos. He also had the discerning (that is, picky) taste of a gentleman, being the rare individual who would show preference between American and European beech leaves or between red and white mulberry branches. He was also known for eating only the center of any flower he was offered. We are thankful for the time we shared, and for everyone who showed him love.”

Morobe was an incredible ambassador to his species and had an impact on all who knew him. From his keepers past and present, to Zoo guests who admired him during visits, he will be dearly missed by all.
